We know what to do.

What is Voice over IP

Voice over IP (VoIP), also known as Internet telephony, is a way of making phone calls using the Internet. VoIP makes use of a packet switched network, rather than the old-fashioned circuit switched public switched telephone network. All of the large telecommunication companies use IP to carry their long distance telephone traffic - so in a way, we all use VoIP whether we know it or not! Over the last few years, more and more large and medium sized companies have begun using VoIP to eliminate the cost of inter-office calls, and reduce their overall telecommunication costs. What we aim to do, is bring the savings and benefits of VoIP right down to the end user - you.

An added benefit of VoIP is that the voice data gets compressed and takes up less bandwidth than a traditional phone call, additionally, silence (which if you think about it, in most telephone conversations, between the two people talking, on average, at least one of them is silent all of the time!) does not get transmitted as it wastes bandwidth!

There are many scenarios where voice over IP can be beneficial - be it for a complete second line, or for keeping in touch with friends and family around the world - it always comes down to reducing phone bills. With free phone calls to other Internet telephony users, and cheap phone calls to standard PSTN telephones around the world, you are sure to save money.

How to get VoIP

It is highly recommended that you have a Broadband connection if you plan on using VoIP. Although it is usable over good dialup connections (56kbps) you will have to refrain from web-browsing or downloading files while using VoIP in order to make sure your call is of a reasonable sound quality. Technically speaking, for high quality VoIP, you should have at least 64kbps in each direction. That is, even the slowest ADSL connection in Australia will do. If you do not currently have Broadband, we can connect you to Onthenet or Netspace, both respected as premier Internet Service Providers (ISP). We are authorised resellers and have a comprehensive list of home, SOHO and business plans available.

There are many providers out there offering voice over IP services, however, just like you need to purchase a telephone to make phone calls, you need either VoIP Hardware or software to make Internet Telephony calls. To make the experience as similar as possible to using a traditional telephone, you need a hardware solution - either in the form of a telephone which either plugs into your computer or your network, or an adapter which allows you to use any standard telephone for VoIP (even a cordless)!

Hardware and Software

If you would like to try out VoIP without spending money on hardware, try out one of the many free software based VoIP solutions - such as Firefly or Express Talk, or even download a generic soft-phone and use the provider of your choice. You can use your computer speakers and microphone for the call. Just remember, the experience will be better when you get a proper VoIP phone or adapter.

If you would like to purchase some hardware to enhance your experience, you first need to decide whether to get PC based handset or headset or self contained telephone adapter. PC based hardware utilises your computer for voice processing and generally relies on a soft-phone whereas a self contained unit such as an IP Phone or telephone adapter plugs directly into a spare Ethernet port on your ADSL modem/router/switch/hub. This means that there is no need to have your computer on to make and receive VoIP calls, in fact, you don't even need a computer!

Still have concerns or questions?

Remember, after setting up VoIP, the only ongoing costs you will have are that of keeping your Internet connection (ie., paying your ISP), and if you want to make calls to non-VoIP users, the cost associated with those calls (remember - this will probably be less than the current prices you pay to call!)
